Support Smart Meter Opt-Out in New Jersey!

Utilities across the country are moving forward with the installation of wireless smart meters: nearly half of all electric customers have smart meters. These smart meters emit pulsed radio frequency radiation that, according to many reports, can damage people’s health and leave residents’ meters vulnerable to malicious attacks from hackers.

The New Jersey legislature is considering a bill that would allow smart meter opt-outs, but does not explicitly prohibit utility companies from charging a one-time fee or monthly fees to do so. Write to your legislators and tell them to amend this law by prohibiting utility companies for charging for smart meter opt-outs.

Subject: Please amend AB 3732/SB 603

Message:

As a resident of New Jersey, I support being able to opt-out of smart meters, but AB 3732/SB 603 does not explicitly prohibit companies from charging either a one-time fee or a monthly fee to do so. This is unacceptable. Research has shed light on what MWR (microwave radiation) does at the cellular level. MWR activates voltage-gated calcium channels, which sends a torrent of calcium into our cells. This sets off a chain reaction: excess calcium leads to increased levels of nitric oxide and superoxide, which react together to form peroxynitrite; peroxynitrites break down to form reactive free radicals. Ultimately, this chain reaction from MWR negatively effects mitochondrial function (the "power houses" in each of our cells), causes severe cellular damage, DNA breaks, accelerates aging, and puts us at higher risk for chronic disease. The UN's International Agency for Research on Cancer calls MWR a class 2B carcinogen, which means it possibly causes cancer in humans--it's in the same category as lead, chloroform, gasoline fumes, and the pesticide DDT. Given these potential dangers, customers in New Jersey should be able to opt-out of smart meter installations at no charge, as is the case in other states. Please amend AB 3732/SB 603 to prohibit utility companies from charging for opt-outs.
