Support Smart Meter Opt-Out in Michigan!

Utilities across the country are moving forward with the installation of wireless smart meters: nearly half of all electric customers have smart meters. These smart meters emit pulsed radio frequency radiation that, according to many reports, can damage people’s health and leave residents’ meters vulnerable to malicious attacks from hackers.

The Michigan legislature is considering a bill that would allow smart meter opt-outs, but allows utility companies to charge a one-time fee and monthly fees for doing so. Write to your legislators and tell them to amend this law by removing the fees for opting out.

Message:

As a resident of Michigan, I support being able to opt-out of smart meters, but HB 4220 allows companies to charge both a one-time fee and a monthly fee to do so. This is unacceptable. Research has shed light on what MWR (microwave radiation) does at the cellular level. MWR activates voltage-gated calcium channels, which sends a torrent of calcium into our cells. This sets off a chain reaction: excess calcium leads to increased levels of nitric oxide and superoxide, which react together to form peroxynitrite; peroxynitrites break down to form reactive free radicals. Ultimately, this chain reaction from MWR negatively effects mitochondrial function (the "power houses" in each of our cells), causes severe cellular damage, DNA breaks, accelerates aging, and puts us at higher risk for chronic disease. The UN's International Agency for Research on Cancer calls MWR a class 2B carcinogen, which means it possibly causes cancer in humans--it's in the same category as lead, chloroform, gasoline fumes, and the pesticide DDT. Given these potential dangers, customers in Michigan should be able to opt-out of smart meter installations at no charge, as is the case in other states. Please amend HB 4220 to remove charges for opt-outs.
